Bird Hunting Safari Experience
A typical bird hunting safari includes two days of shooting, a rest day (with optional tours or lodge relaxation), followed by another two days of shooting. Clients will experience:
• Duck Shooting: Decoyed duck hunting from dry blinds near water with no need for waders. Yellow-billed Ducks and Red-Billed Teal fly into roosting ponds in large numbers. Expect 10-20 birds per gun.
• Geese Shooting: Shoot Spurwing Geese, the largest geese in the world, in screen blinds on cornfields. Experience the thunderous sound of their wings as they land among your decoys, with 10 birds per gun per shoot.
• Dove Shooting: Hot-barreled dove action in sunflower or sorghum fields. The African Turtle Dove, known as the world’s most challenging game bird, will test even the most skilled wingshooters. Expect to shoot 500 to 1,500 shells per day.
• Rock Pigeon Shooting: Decoy Rock Pigeons in cornfields with the chance to fire 200-500 shells per shoot.
• Driven Guinea Fowl: Experience a traditional Zulu hunt with 20 chanting beaters driving Guinea Fowl over hunters. Expect 10-50 birds in a morning session.
• Francolin and Partridge: Hunt these birds over skilled pointers, experiencing the thrill of flushing game birds on the walk.
Hunting Locations
• KwaZulu-Natal (Vryheid): The main hunting base, offering safaris from May to August. Shoot 10 wild bird species in one safari, including ducks, geese, doves, pigeons, Guinea Fowl, and Francolin.
• Free State: Known for high-volume dove and pigeon shooting from March to June, clients can shoot 3-6 cases of ammunition daily. Goose hunting is also available in May, along with Francolin and Partridge hunting with well-trained German shorthaired pointers.
