Duck Hunting on the Laguna Madre
Duck hunting in Mexico should be at the top of every waterfowler’s bucket list. The Laguna Madre and nearby freshwater ponds winter large numbers of ducks coming down the Central Flyway. With low hunting pressure, liberal limits, and strong concentrations of wintering birds, this region offers some of the most exciting duck hunting in Mexico.
Hunters can expect a variety of ducks including:
- Redheads
- Pintails
- Blue-wing teal
- Green-wing teal
- Wigeon
- Shovelers
- Other migrating waterfowl
Many duck hunts take place on the Laguna Madre using airboats, while other hunts may be on inland freshwater ponds depending on bird movement, weather, and water conditions.
This is warm-weather duck hunting at its best. With average January temperatures around 75 degrees, you may spend much of your hunt in a lightweight shirt, although occasional cold fronts can push through and improve bird movement.
For hunters used to crowded public marshes and short seasons back home, duck hunting in San Fernando, Mexico can be an eye-opening experience. Many hunters shoot more ducks in a few days here than they do during an entire season at home.
Quail Hunting Behind Pointing Dogs
San Fernando also offers excellent quail hunting behind pointing dogs. The region’s brush, grasslands, and agricultural edges create strong habitat for wild quail.
Quail hunts are conducted with experienced guides and trained bird dogs. For hunters who love watching dogs work, walking behind pointing dogs in Mexico is a special experience. These hunts can be combined with ducks, white-wing doves, or mourning doves depending on season and availability.
Quail hunting is especially popular during the late fall and winter months when combo hunts are available.
Mourning Dove Hunts & Combo Wingshooting Packages
In addition to white-wing doves, the area also offers mourning dove hunting. Combo hunts can include:
- Duck hunting on the Laguna Madre
- Quail hunting behind pointing dogs
- Mourning dove hunting
- White-wing dove hunting during season
Duck, quail, and mourning dove combo hunts are typically available from late October through late February. These combination trips are a great way to experience multiple styles of wingshooting in one easy-to-reach destination.
Hunts can often be customized when arranged in advance. Extra days may also be added depending on lodge availability.
