Wingshooting in Romania

Romania is one of Europe’s great hidden gems for traveling wingshooters. With a long hunting tradition, strong migratory bird movement, productive agricultural country, and legendary waterfowl areas near the Danube River and Black Sea region, Romania offers a unique combination of adventure, culture, and excellent bird hunting.

For hunters looking for something different than the standard South American or North American wingshooting trip, Romania delivers a true European hunting experience. Depending on the season and location, hunters can pursue ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, doves, and pigeons. It is a fantastic destination for mixed-bag wingshooting, waterfowl hunting, upland-style hunting, and hunters who simply enjoy exploring new countries with deep sporting traditions.

I personally scouted Romania in 2023, evaluating the outfitters, hunting areas, lodging, travel logistics, and overall experience. What I found was a country with impressive wingshooting potential, hunter-friendly organization, comfortable accommodations, good food, skilled guides, and plenty to see before or after the hunt.

Why Hunt Romania?
Romania offers a wingshooting experience that feels both familiar and completely different. Goose hunting in certain areas can remind hunters of the American Midwest or the Canadian prairies, while duck hunting on lakes, marshes, and the Danube River provides a classic European waterfowl adventure.
The country is home to a wide variety of duck species and strong numbers of specklebelly geese during the migration and wintering periods. Upland and migratory bird hunters can also enjoy quail, pheasants, doves, and pigeons depending on the time of year and the area being hunted.
Romania is also easy to access. Hunters typically fly into Bucharest, where the outfitter handles the rest of the trip, including airport transfers, lodging, meals, transportation to the hunting areas, licenses, insurance, and guiding.

Available Wingshooting in Romania
Romania can offer several different bird hunting opportunities depending on the season:

Duck Hunting
Duck hunting in Romania can take place on lakes, wetlands, and along the Danube River. This is one of the most exciting parts of the Romanian wingshooting program, with hunters enjoying a variety of European waterfowl species in scenic and productive areas.
The duck season generally runs from September through February 15, with some of the best opportunities during the main migration and wintering periods.

Goose Hunting
Romania is well known for specklebelly geese and other migratory geese. Goose hunts are typically conducted from blinds in agricultural fields using decoys and calls, much like traditional goose hunting in the United States or Canada.
The mornings can be fast-paced and exciting, with birds working into the decoys over open fields and big European skies.

Quail Hunting
Quail hunting in Romania is a great early-season option. Hunts are generally conducted in the morning over dogs, before the heat of the day. These hunts offer a classic upland-style experience across open plains and agricultural country.
Quail season generally begins August 15 and runs into October.
Pheasant Hunting
Romania also offers pheasant hunting in traditional countryside settings. Depending on the area, pheasant hunts may be worked with dogs or organized as part of a mixed-game program. This is a great option for hunters who enjoy European-style upland hunting and want to combine pheasants with other bird species.
Dove and Pigeon Hunting
Romania can also offer dove and pigeon shooting depending on timing and location. Wood pigeons, doves, and other migratory birds move through agricultural areas, creating opportunities for hunters who enjoy pass shooting, decoying, and mixed-bag wingshooting.

Wingshooting Seasons
Typical Romania wingshooting seasons include:
Quail: August 15 – October 31

Bringing Firearms to Romania
Bringing firearms into Romania is very possible, but it must be arranged in advance. Hunters typically need an invitation letter from the outfitter, a valid hunting license from their home country, firearm details submitted ahead of time, and international medical insurance.
For hunters who prefer to travel without firearms, gun rental is available locally. This is often the easiest option for international hunters who want a smooth, stress-free trip.
Lodging and Hospitality
Lodging in Romania is clean, comfortable, and practical for the hunting program. Depending on the species, season, and area being hunted, accommodations may include hotels, hunting lodges, or nice countryside houses located closer to the best hunting grounds.
The outfitters move hunters according to where the best wingshooting is at the time of the hunt. This flexibility is one of the advantages of hunting Romania. Instead of being locked into one fixed lodge or area, hunters can be positioned near the best bird numbers and most productive hunting.
The guides and scouts work hard to stay on birds, and the hosts provide good food, comfortable lodging, and a well-organized hunting experience.
Travel and Things to Do in Romania
Most hunters will fly into Bucharest, where they are met by the outfitter and transferred to the hunting area.
Bucharest is worth spending time in before or after the hunt. The city offers Old Town, thermal spas, shopping, casinos, excellent restaurants, nightlife, and luxury hotels. For non-hunters or hunters wanting to extend the trip, Romania has plenty of history, culture, and sightseeing.
Side trips can also be arranged to places such as Dracula’s Castle in Brasov, historic mountain towns, hunting museums, and other cultural attractions. Romania is a beautiful country with a rich history, making this trip much more than just a hunt.
A True European Wingshooting Adventure
Romania is ideal for hunters who want a different kind of wingshooting trip. The hunting can be excellent, but the overall experience is what makes the country special. From the Danube River and agricultural plains to historic cities, mountain castles, local food, and traditional European hunting culture, Romania offers a memorable adventure from start to finish.
Whether you are interested in ducks and geese, quail and pheasants, pigeons and doves, or a mixed-bag bird hunting trip, Romania deserves to be on your list.
